Krystal Chung appreciates Mr. Robert Bernard, a teacher at INDEPENDENCE HIGH SCHOOL in San Jose, CA

Dear Mr. Bernard, I don’t know if you remember me, but I’m Krystal Chung from your 5th period Guitar 1 class last year. I sat in the front row, right in the middle. I am graduating soon and I recently committed to UC Berkeley! Since it’s Teacher’s Appreciation Week, I thought I would let you know how thankful I am to have had your Guitar 1 class junior year. I’ve always wanted to learn guitar and after my parents saw the progress I had been making in your class, they bought me my own guitar for Christmas. When we shifted to distance learning toward the end of the year, I was worried it was going to be difficult learning guitar through a screen. Although it was still a struggle, you were a great teacher and I was still able to learn a lot of new techniques. I remember during one of our online classes, you showed us a Harry Styles TinyDeskConcert video and it really inspired me. I started listening to his music more and paid attention to all the instrumental parts of his songs. The TinyDeskConcert made me realize how simple instruments can make such complex harmonies. This pushed me to learn a little more through Youtube videos I found online. I ended up teaching myself fingerpicking and I can now play many of my favorite songs. The first song I learned fingerpicking on was Sweet Creature by Harry Styles. I later learned a few more Harry songs I heard from the TinyDeskConcert like Cherry. If you want, I’d love to send you a video of some of the songs I learned! Thank you so much for teaching and inspiring me. Even when things got difficult during distance learning, you were patient and still did an amazing job teaching. Best Regards, Krystal Chung
