Ethan Thai appreciates Ms. Maria Dones, a teacher at INDEPENDENCE HIGH SCHOOL in San Jose, CA

Dear Ms. Dones, Hello! Thank you for being my Math 2 teacher three years ago! It’s pretty crazy how long ago that was; I was a freshman back then and didn’t really know much about the school or have that many friends to be honest. Along the way to the end of my senior year now, I’ve somehow been an officer in clubs like UNICEF & LOT, started GGPP with Alex Le, been selected as an ASB Historian, and have made many great friends along the way. I didn’t expect so many things to happen in high school, but I’m super glad that they all happened the way they did (even all of the low points too). Your math class was one of the classes I was surprised to feel comfortable in because of how I was a freshman in Math 2. Looking back, it definitely wasn’t extreme like being a freshman and taking Calculus, but still it was a relief to not feel like higher levels of math would be intimidating or too difficult for me. Now, I’m currently in Calculus BC and taking Statistics! I will not say that Calculus was always easy to understand (like right now, I am quite concerned for the AP exam but will still prepare for it!), but I’m glad that I felt confident enough to pursue AP math classes after taking your class. I also appreciate your hard work being the tennis coach for years! Even if I never actually played on the team, I was present during many practices and even a few games. During my time on the court, I was actually able to learn how to juggle with the tennis balls which is a pretty cool trick to do now! I also am glad that you allowed your classroom to be used sometimes after school. Good memories were made there, especially during the days leading up to the UNICEF Benefit Show and during the hours before that show. The ability to practice there helped GGPP perform extremely well for the show, and we even used a picture taken there as the cover art for a GGPP music album (which has recently been taken down on streaming platforms lol but that is besides the point). Speaking of GGPP, thank you very much for being the GGPP Club Advisor! Even if we did not have any meetings this school year, our club status allowed us to obtain a spot in the yearbook as a club! Hopefully GGPP will be continued in the future, probably not as a club but as a fun thing on the side. Again, thank you for everything you do! Hopefully we can meet again in the future :) With admiration, Ethan Thai -- Former Math 2, Period 2 Student (2017-18)
